Turn Characters On and Off

(Sorry of this is a dup) I have a series. All characters across all the books are listed for all books in the series, but not all characters are present in all the books. If there was a way to indicate within each book which characters to use, or not, would be great. Perhaps a dropdown list for active or inactive?
