Permanent custom worldbuilding elements

I have added a field to my characters that I have saved for their species. I like that I can use this across different novels and that it persists; I have a general complaint about this specifically that right now many of the fields only apply to the protagonist template for characters, so I’d love to be able to edit the template that all character types inherit.

However, I would like to be able to generate, save, edit, and otherwise use a species template which appropriately would belong in the Worldbuilding elements. I recognize that I can use Custom element for this purpose and add fields, but I want a named type, and I want the type and template to persist from novel to novel rather than having to reinvent it every time for each novel.

It is obvious that the data model and usage of this is more general. While my specific use case is a multi-species or non-human-species world-building element, I am sure that other users will find a great many creative ways to extend the world-building elements for their types, kinds, sorts, varieties, classes, and categories.
