Linking specific characters & their role to books within a series.

I’m writing a series with a significant number of characters and world building. While they’re all based in the same fantasy world, every time I want to switch books I have to go through characters/worldbuilding and note which ones are now the new protagonists and minor characters or else the prose starts getting wacky and randomly bringing in other books main characters. It’d be helpful if there was a way to do that once, and it changes depending on what project you’re currently working on.
