Linking a document to multiple predecessor documents and having the AI assistant use these links

I would like to be able to link a document to multiple predecessor documents to reflect multiple independent plot elements/characters that evolve separately but then come together. For example, Character A is in documents 1 and 3; Character B is in documents 2 and 4; they meet in document 5.
